If you place them side by side you reduce the ability to get natural light. The great thing about containers is that you can stack ’em 8 high. Check this out: http://www.snoozebox.com
These were used for the Queen of England’s diamond jubilee, among other things. Take a good look at the rooms. That can all be done cheaper. Use plywood to make the furniture and put in communal bathrooms instead of private. Folding beds could free up space to make the rooms multi-use.
If you want to make a long-term house with it I’d look at designs like this: http://www.cargotecture.com/page2.html
My wife and I are considering making one of these as a trailer for long term temporary housing while building a house. Our design is a little different. An opaque bathroom door is the first change. We also are looking at putting a bathtub under the couch and building a collapsing loft area over the kitchen. We’d collapse it when on the road to stay under 13′. Once our home is done we want to bolt it to the house as a removable permanent addition. It’s also a good bug-out trailer or camper.
The tiny house movement and RVs both have come up with ways to live comfortably and cheaply in small spaces. I got a bunch of ideas from faircompanies.com, they even have a full length documentary. They have a bunch good ideas for sustainability/off grid living and some bad ones. Some of those folk are nuts! And that’s coming from me!
